ABB, the Swiss engineering conglomerate, has named Peter Voser, the former head of Royal Dutch Shell, as its new chairman.

If Mr Voser’s election is confirmed by shareholders at next year’s annual general meeting, he will replace the 72-year-old Hubertus von Grünberg, who has been chairman of ABB since 2007, but decided not to stand for re-election.

Mr Voser’s appointment would mark a return to a former stamping ground for the 56-year-old Swiss national. Between two stints at Shell, where he spent the bulk of his career, Mr Voser worked for two years as ABB’s chief financial officer.

Panagiotis Spiliopoulos, an analyst at Vontobel, said Mr Voser was a “top manager” and that his appointment was “a smart move which guarantees a seamless transition”.

“Peter Voser brings a wealth of relevant experience and a strong track record,” he wrote. “Between 2002 and October 2004, [he] was CFO of ABB and instrumental behind [its] successful turnround.”

Mr von Grünberg said he was delighted that Mr Voser had agreed to stand as chairman. “[He] brings intimate knowledge of ABB and its key markets as well as an excellent track record as a leader in large, global organisations”, Mr von Grünberg said.

Mr Voser stepped down as chief executive of Shell at the end of 2013, saying he felt it was time for a lifestyle change following four years at the helm of the company, and another five years as the group’s chief financial officer.

During his time at Shell, he was widely credited with helping to transform a group that had been rocked to its foundations by a reserves accounting scandal and which was seen as the sick man of the oil industry.

Despite spending much of his career outside Switzerland, Mr Voser remains a well-known figure in Swiss boardrooms. He is currently a director at the Basel-based pharma giant Roche, and until 2010 also seved on the board of UBS, Switzerland’s biggest bank.

As well as Mr von Grünberg, ABB said another long-serving director, the 71-year-old Michael Treschow, would also step down from the group’s board.

In his stead, David Constable, chief executive of the South African chemicals and energy group Sasol, will stand for election to the board.

Jacob Wallenberg, who has been a director at ABB since 1999, will stand for election as vice-chairman.

Shares in ABB were up 2.2 per cent at SFr20.61 in afternoon trading in Zürich.

Energy giant Shell was led by Peter Voser until the end of last year
Former Shell chief executive Peter Voser will be joining Zurich-based power grid maker ABB as chairman, the firm announced yesterday. Voser stepped down as chief of Shell at the end of 2013 and takes over from outgoing 72-year-old chairman Hubertus von Grunberg.

Another septuagenarian board member Michael Treschow, 71, has also announced he will leave at the next annual shareholders’ meeting.

The shake-up is all part of a wider push for new blood at the top of the firm, which includes the appointment of new chief Ulrich Spiesshofer and CFO Eric Elzvik.

Voser spent four years at the helm of Shell and is credited with simplifying its over complex structures. At ABB, he will be working closely with Spiesshofer to implement a five-year strategy, which aims to minimise risky projects. “I am honoured to be nominated as chairman of the board,” said Voser.
